The EU has an overall climate objective called "20-20-20".
- 20 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared with
1990 levels.
- 20 per cent increase in renewable energies by 2020.
- 20 per cent reduction of energy consumption through an
improvement in energy efficiency by 2020
- Global warming may not exceed 2 degrees in 2050.

Greenhouse
gases
Transport constitutes 18 per cent of the global greenhouse gas
emissions and 7 per cent of the resource consumption.
The EU focuses especially on construction, food production and
transport. These areas have not generated noticeable results. This
means that there will be extra pressure on these areas through to
2020. Construction, food production and transport are responsible
for 2/3 of the global climate impact.
In 2005, the EU measured greenhouse gas emissions in a number of
areas:
- Transport 19,1 per cent
- Industry 21,2 per cent
- Households 15,1 per cent
- Agriculture 9,2 per cent
- Waste 2,9 per cent
- Solvents 0,2 per cent
- Energy industry 32,3 per cent
